The city's historic architecture dates from its founding in 1733 through the cotton era. When the Civil War forced an abrupt end to plantation life, the reconstruction afterwards brought many changes to the lifestyles of Savannah.

Savannah GA historic district waterfront

The charming historic district is concentrated in a two and one-half square mile area. The original city was planned and laid out in 1733 by General James Edward Oglethorpe. The city consisted of 24 park-like squares surrounded by some of the South's most elegant mansions. Today despite earthquakes, fires and hurricanes, almost all of Oglethorpe's original squares remain intact. They're now lush garden parks that beautifully showcase historically and architecturally significant 18th and 19th century homes and buildings. River street’s old cotton warehouses and cobblestone streets are home to unique shops and restaurants.
